The
historic market town of Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire has
been a centre of musical excellence since medieval times.
St. Mary's Parish Church has been at the forefront of
this tradition and contains many carvings of musicians, indeed the very
influential medieval Guild of Musicians was based in Beverley and gave
generous financial donations towards the building of this glorious church.
The present choir is one of the very few parish church
choirs in the UK without a choir school which still maintains the centuries-old
tradition of having male only singers, i.e. boy choristers and adult
male altos, tenors and basses.
Robed in blue cassocks and white surplices the choir leads
the sung parts of our services twice every Sunday. It has a repertoire
ranging from medieval plainsong to works of living composers.
Under the direction of Organist and Choirmaster, Alan
Binnington, himself a former Cambridge Choral Scholar, the choir works
hard to maintain the standards set by the countless generations of musicians
associated with St. Mary's, Beverley.
