The Stewardship Secretary

Peter PocockPeter Pocock

Peter Pocock is a retired chartered accountant having practiced in Hull from 1961 to September 2001, during the last 13 years being a partner in a national firm.

He moved to Beverley from Hull in 1965 and has been attending St Mary's Church ever since. In that time he has served on the PCC for 25 years and he is still on the finance committee. Peter has been the covenant secretary/stewardship secretary since 1981.

Peter was Deanery Financial Adviser for 10 years. He served on the York Diocesan Board of Finance for 30 years and was chairman of its Property, Trust and Investment Committee for the last eleven years. He retired from both in 2005

As stewardship secretary Peter is also responsible for the weekly envelopes, as most covenentors use this method to 'Gift Aid' their support for the church.

The hardest part is encouraging people to give generously, and realistically, and actually to 'Gift Aid' their giving. Quite a few members review their giving regularly and generously but the majority do not appreciate the true meaning of giving to the Church. Peter says that his job is to educate the congregation in the way of giving and whilst articles in the Church magazine do help the most efficient way is by personal contact and talking to them individually.
