Ron
was Cockney born - if the wind is blowing in the right direction
- and was brought up in SE London.
He came to Hull 1945 after Army Service and became the 235th undergraduate
of the University College of Hull, where he graduated in History
and trained as a teacher. He subsequently taught in St Andrew's
(Fish Dock), Wilberforce and Andrew Marvell schools in Hull in between
jobs in Gold Coast (Ghana), Singapore (twice), Canada, North Wales,
Cleethorpes and Wiltshire.
He married Doreen very early on and she has cheerfully endured
frequent uprootings. They have two children, John and Jill, and
three grandchildren.
Ron was fascinated with Christianity (as an atheist) through studying
the Reformation. He was eventually baptised and confirmed at St
Andrew's, Hull and considers himself to be lucky to meet some wonderful
priests along the way.
Family considerations prevented his ordination in the “sixties”.
Finally when “too old” he was trained and ordained at Salisbury,
followed by ministry in Wiltshire, Hornsea and Sussex. He says he
is grateful and honoured to be accepted at St Mary's, which both
he and Doreen love.
