Minster - The Percy Tomb

The north choir aisle leads to the Northumberland Chapel at the north-east corner of the Minster.

This chapel was added to hold the tomb of Henry Percy, the 4th Earl of Northumberland, murdered by rebels in 1489. The Percy family were the dominant aristocrats in this area of England during the 14th and 15th centuries and lived just to the north of Beverley, in Leconfield.

A second Percy Tomb is situated next to the High Altar on its north side, as shown here, and is thought to be that of Lady Eleanor Percy who died in 1328. It has a highly decorated freestone canopy, considered to be a crowning achievement of medieval European art.
