Minster - The Frith Stool

On the north side of the altar is the oldest object to be found in the Minster, known as the Frith Stool or Chair.

It is traditionally linked to the Minster's right of sanctuary, although it may have originally been an abbot's or a bishop's throne. The word frithu is the Anglo-Saxon word for 'peace'.
