Beverley Minster, mother church to St Mary's, Beverley

The reason, surprising to many visitors to Beverley, that the town has two fine church buildings like St Mary's and the Minster is that Beverley used to be a very significant town by medieval standards.

In 1377 Beverley was taxed as the eleventh largest town in England.
