Welcome to St Mary's!

The Nave of St Mary's church

Please visit our lovely church, which is just inside North Bar, Beverley. In fact, the address of the church is North Bar Within.

We hope you will enjoy looking round St Mary's. It stands as a memorial to the vision and skill of earlier generations. It is a reminder of the grandeur and love of God.

In St Mary's you are not standing in a museum. This building continues to be the "home" for a living Christian community. Prayers and praise are offered here. God's word is read and preached here. The sacraments are celebrated here.

St Mary's, like many churches, has a tower reaching upwards beyond the rest of the building. By this means, the designers remind us that God is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. They want to lift our hearts in worship, thanksgiving and prayer.

Again, like many other churches, St Mary's is built in the shape of a cross. The very stones cry out that God is love and that Jesus died for us. But Christians affirm that Jesus was too good and too great to be held by death. Christianity is a joyful faith - it celebrates resurrection and life.

We hope that this building will convey these deep and reassuring truths to you. As well as enjoying the architecture you may wish to pause and pray.

If you would like more information about the building, a guide book and leaflets are on sale together with postcards and souvenirs.

We do invite you to give a donation before you leave to help us to maintain this beautiful church as a centre of Christian worship.
