Beverley was the traditional centre for all minstrels between the
River Trent and the River Tweed, they met here every year during
Rogation week in order to choose their Aldermen and Stewards. During
the period 1424 to 1467 silver badges were bought for the minstrels.
They each weighed approximately 4 1/2 oz. They are shown here wearing
these badges, which are hung on a silver chain of 37 links. This
group of five minstrels was carved about 1520. Until 1974 the Mayoress
of Beverley wore a similar collar and badge on official occasions.
