Mr Ben Chapman
 |
BEN CHAPMAN was born in Kingston upon Hull in 1941.
He was educated at Mersey Street School, leaving at 15 with no qualifications
(but an excellent grounding in the three R's). On leaving school in
1956 he found employment with a firm of Heraldic Artists, and was
subsequently apprenticed to the celebrated woodcarver of Patrington,
East Yorkshire, the late Clifford Longley. At the age of 18 'discovered'
misericords and from then has made a lifelong study of their iconography.
Ben has built up what is probably the largest library on the subject
in existence. Ben began photographing misericords in the 1960's and
has around 1000 individual negatives on file. In 1996 Ben published
'Yorkshire Misericords' (Highgate Publications (Beverley) Ltd.) ISBN
0 948929 92 8. Ben has written widely on the subject and he is in
the process of compiling a book of his 100 favourite misericord carvings.
This will be entitled 'Carvers Choice'. |
