The Parish Church of St Mary, Beverley.The beauty and grace of this church are not matters of merely local comment. It may fairly be claimed that St Mary's holds very high rank among the great Parish Churches of England, and such was the opinion of both Sir Nikolaus Pevsner and Sir John Betjeman. The view of the exterior is especially fine from the south-west, in which the pinnacles of the South Porch mingle with those of the battlements of the Nave, South Transept and central Tower. The West Front is a fine example of late fourteenth century work and is reminiscent of that of the Chapel of King's College, Cambridge, which was built more than half a century later. The interior has height and grace, dignity and beauty; and there are lovely cross views, such as that from the South Transept into the Chapel of St Michael in the north-east corner. Views along the north aisle from the Font towards St Michael's Chapel, along the Nave from the West Door and along the south aisle towards St Catherine's Chapel support the statement in the guide that
