The Font - in Derbyshire marble

The Font is of Derbyshire marble. The octagonal bowl and plinth are richly ornamented and has a decorated carved lid.

The inscription running around the top of the bowl reads,

  • Pray for the sowles of Wyllm Leryffaxe draper and, his wyvis whiche made thys font of his pper costes the X day of marcie ye yere of our Lord MDXXX"

By his will, made on Dec. 22nd, 1530, William Leryffax appointed Thomas, Lord Prior of Watton, and Richard, Lord Abbot of Meuxe, as guardians of his son, Robert.

This is an interesting indication of the apparent security of the old order less than ten years before all the monastic life in England was swept away.
