Tollgavel explanatory plaque
TOLL GAVEL 'TOLEGAVELL' WAS ORIGINALLY PART OF THE ALTA VIA THE MAIN STREET THROUGH THE TOWN. THE NAME DERIVES FROM TOLL AND GAFOL (RENT) AND INDICATES A PLACE WHERE TOLLS WERE PAID BY TRADERS COMING TO MARKETS AND FAIRS.

The shopping streets from Saturday Market along Toll Gavel, into Butcher Row and thence to Wednesday Market is pedestrianised nowadays. Notice the Georgian details in the eaves of this building now occupied by a very well known electrical shop which sells television sets and computers.
