A view of North Bar from SE (inside the Bar)

In 1450 a local mercer called Roger Cokirham paid rent for a town house on the west side of the bar and the 'chamber over the bar'. The passageways at the sides of the bar were built following an inspection by the borough council in 1792. Work inside the west passageway in 1867 uncovered a very thick stone wall. This was thought to have been a part of a previous gateway structure.

The cost of the construction of the bar is displayed on the small green plaque mounted on the wall on the west of the arch.
