The plaque over the road sign for Hengate reads:-

"The name Hengate probably derives from Henngata - the street where hens were kept. Another suggestion is Hen-Wen, a pagan goddess"

The buildings on the south side of Hengate show distinct signs of age. Notice the bulging! One of these building carries a plague indicating that it used to be property belonging to St Mary's
